Cheese Straws

  • 8 ounce(s) pastry flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon(s) salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon(s) black or white pepper
  • 4 ounce(s) Grace Margarine
  • 4 ounce(s) Anchor Natural Cheddar Cheese, grated
  • 2 medium egg yolks
  • 4 tablespoon(s) cold water

Cheese Straws Directions

  1. Sift together pastry flour, salt and black/white pepper into a mixing bowl.
  2. Rub in the margarine until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs; fold in the grated cheese.
  3. Add egg yolks and enough cold water to bind the mixture together.
  4. Cover dough and put to relax in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  5. Roll out the pastry dough on a lightly floured work surface to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
  6. Cut into lengths of 4, 5 or 6 inch strips and rings of about 2 inches in diameter.
  7. Bake on an ungreased baking tray 200°C (400°F) for 8 to 10 minutes.
  8. Cool on a wire rack.

    To Serve:  Serve with the straws arranged through the rings.

    Recipe Note:  To create a decorative design, hold both ends of the cheese straws and twist in opposite direction.  Two cheese straws may also be twisted together.
